Malaysian telecommunications provider, CelcomDigi, and South Korea's SK Telecom have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aiming to advance the commercialization of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Malaysian market.

The agreement outlines plans for the two companies to share insights and collaborate on developing AI use cases tailored for Malaysia. Under the agreement, the entities will also explore the commercialization of AI services and identify new business opportunities to expand these offerings.

The AI use cases developed under the collaboration will first be implemented within CelcomDigi’s departments before progressing to the commercialization phase.

During the signing ceremony, held at SK Telecom’s headquarters in Seoul, CelcomDigi CEO, Datuk Idham Nawawi, expressed that he aspires for the company to become one of the leading AI firms in Malaysia over the next few years.

He stated that CelcomDigi has the necessary capabilities as it has connected over 20 million users on its network and possesses robust infrastructure. He also mentioned that the company is developing facilities which he believes provide a strong foundation for entering the AI sector.

In July, CelcomDigi launched its AI Experience Centre (AiX), designed to showcase AI-driven solutions. It was developed in collaboration with an ecosystem of 40 global technology companies, including SK Telecom, as well as local partners and solution providers.

Additionally, CelcomDigi and SK Telecom are working together on metaverse use cases through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which was signed in March 2023.
