Malaysian telecommunications company, CelcomDigi, has announced that it is almost halfway through the process of integrating and modernizing its mobile network nationwide. This progress is ahead of schedule according to its post-merger transformation plan.

As of the end of April 2024, CelcomDigi has completed 44% of its network integration and modernization program, which began in June 2023, approximately seven months after the merger of Celcom Axiata and Digi Telecommunications was approved by both companies' boards in November 2022.

The company's recent upgrades have significantly impacted over 7,200 sites, leading to tangible improvements for customers. These upgrades have translated into enhanced download speeds ranging from 20% to 26% and increased signal strength by 13% to 16% in the areas where the upgrades were implemented.

By the end of June, CelcomDigi anticipates achieving the 50% completion milestone in four states. Additionally, they project reaching 60% completion in three states, with the program set for completion in Penang.

The entire initiative is set to be completed nationwide by 2026. The company also revealed that its 4G LTE and 4G LTE-Advanced network coverage is sitting at 96.8% and 92.1% respectively across the country, with 86% of its sites ready for 5G. CelcomDigi is also upgrading its 5G core network to support advanced 5G services.

Furthermore, CelcomDigi has invested MYR 4 billion (USD 846 million) in capital expenditure for the project, aiming to establish 18,000 5G-ready sites and transform into a digital growth engine for Malaysia.

CEO, Datuk Idham Nawawi, stated that the new network is designed to smoothly transition into a 5G network with 18,000 sites, enabling ultra-high speeds, low latency, and enhanced digital experiences for Malaysian consumers and businesses. The company is collaborating with strategic partners to test 5.5G technologies and new use cases for improved digital experiences.
