Globe Telecom has issued a warning to its customers regarding a new voice phishing (vishing) scam involving fraudsters posing as representatives of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).

Scammers are contacting potential victims, alleging that their phone numbers are connected to illegal activities. The fraudsters then attempt to extort money, threatening arrest if the victims do not comply with their demands.

“Criminals prey on our natural respect for authority, using it as a weapon to deceive and manipulate. This is what we see in this new scam modus, where fraudsters pretend to be NTC officials. We call on our customers to be very vigilant and do not fall victim to these scammers,” said Anton Reynaldo Bonifacio, Globe’s Chief Information Security Officer.

The telecom giant emphasized the importance of maintaining vigilance among mobile users to prevent falling victim to such scams. Globe has advised the public to be cautious of unsolicited calls, particularly those not found in their phone logs.

The telecom company stressed that if someone answers such a call, they should refrain from sharing personal information, such as bank account details, even if the caller asserts they are affiliated with a legitimate organization.

Globe advised that if individuals are uncertain about the legitimacy of a call, they should hang up and contact the organization directly using a known, correct phone number. The telco also recommended that the public report any suspicious calls to the authorities.
