Singtel has announced that it is the sole network provider in Singapore to achieve comprehensive 5G coverage across the entire Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network. This milestone includes all six underground lines and the 27 stations on the newly finished Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL).

The upgrade process began in 2022, led by a specialized engineering team. With this improved coverage, passengers can now experience fast and reliable 5G connectivity throughout their journeys on Singapore’s train system.

Commenting on this coverage, Mr. Ng Tian Chong, CEO of Singtel Singapore, said, “Many of today’s commuters, who are on 5G, want to maximize their time wherever they may be. By ensuring strong 5G connectivity throughout  Singapore’s MRT network, we’re supporting thousands of commuters who use digital tools to complete their daily tasks. Whether traveling above or below ground, our customers can rely on our strong connectivity to work on-the-go, keep in touch with their loved ones, surf the internet, stream videos or game on their mobile devices. We’re proud to have achieved this new milestone,  demonstrating our commitment to delivering the best connectivity in Singapore.”

To achieve complete 5G connectivity on both the underground and new lines of Singapore’s rapid rail system, Singtel engineers faced several challenges. They conducted testing and installation during the stations' non-operational hours to avoid disrupting train services. Additionally, they worked in confined spaces that required specialized tools and careful, precise execution to ensure safety and effectiveness.

In alignment with Singtel’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2045, engineers have expertly reconfigured existing hardware originally designed for 3G and 4G networks to support 5G within MRT tunnels, thereby conserving time and resources.

With the installations now complete across MRT lines, Singtel’s 5G coverage extends to over 1,700 outdoor and 1,000 indoor locations, including all shopping malls and transport hubs along the MRT network.

Moreover, Singtel continues to enhance its 5G offerings with innovations such as the 5G Express Pass, which was introduced in 2023. This value-added service prioritizes network access for customers in high-traffic areas, providing a smoother experience during crowded events.
