M1 has announced the discontinuation of all 3G services, including voice, messaging, and data, effective from August 1, 2024.

The move aligns with global trends in advanced markets to phase out outdated technology in favor of new 5G services. With the cessation of 3G networks, M1 plans to utilize the available spectrum to enhance its 5G services, promising faster speeds, higher data throughput, and improved security and reliability for users.

Over the years, M1 has actively encouraged customers reliant on its 3G network to upgrade their devices for compatibility with newer 4G and 5G networks.

Since announcing the retirement of its 3G network in July 2023, M1 has intensified outreach efforts through proactive communication via calls, SMS, and emails. Staff across all M1 retail stores have provided dedicated support and guidance to customers, particularly focusing on assisting elderly users. As a result of these efforts, they have significantly reduced the number of customers using 3G handsets within M1's current mobile base.

Manjot Singh Mann, M1’s Chief Executive Officer is enthusiastic about Singapore's leadership in global and regional 5G adoption, and anticipates that more customers stand to enjoy faster speeds, nearly real-time network responses, and improved connectivity. He emphasized that transitioning to 5G will also enhance the quality and security of services available to mobile users in Singapore.

“Through our proactive and frequent communications about the cessation of 3G services across various channels, we have ensured that our customers are well-informed in advance, with only a small percentage who are still reliant on 3G today. For these remaining customers, we would urge them to make the switch soon, or let us know if they need further help,” Mann added.

Currently, all M1 mobile customers are subscribed to either 4G or 5G plans. To support the small number of customers still using 3G handsets that rely on the 3G network, M1 is actively promoting upgrades to 4G or 5G-enabled devices. They are offering a range of attractive promotions, including a no-contract option to upgrade to a new handset starting from USD 168.

Moreover, customers can benefit from additional discounts by trading in their existing 3G devices. These initiatives aim to ensure minimal service disruption and enable customers to access the enhanced benefits of modern mobile technologies.
