Nokia and Taiwan Mobile have extended their 5G contract for one year to improve Taiwan Mobile's 5G network performance and capacity, as well as upgrade its 4G/LTE network.

This will enhance capacity, coverage, and provide a better experience for Taiwan Mobile's customer base of around 10 million, including those in rural areas. The extension comes following Taiwan Mobile and Taiwan Star’s merger last year and will help prepare Taiwan Mobile's network for the 5G-Advanced era.

Improving the 5G Experience

As part of the agreement, Nokia will provide equipment from its 5G AirScale portfolio for the first time in Taiwan. This includes advanced AirScale baseband solutions, Habrok 32 and Osprey 32 Massive MIMO radios, and Remote Radio Head products. These technologies, powered by energy-efficient ReefShark System-on-Chip technology, will improve coverage and capacity. The project will also involve upgrading thousands of existing LTE sites for better energy efficiency to support Taiwan Mobile's sustainability goals. Additionally, Nokia's IPAA+ solution will be installed to help add more antennas in crowded urban areas.

Taiwan Mobile will also implement Nokia's Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology to combine radio spectrum and enhance data rates, offering customers better throughput, capacity, and performance. Nokia has been a partner of Taiwan Mobile for over 20 years, providing 2G, 3G, and 4G mobile networks. Nokia recently assisted Taiwan Mobile in deploying its nationwide 5G infrastructure, including over 3,000 new cell sites.

Jamie Lin, President of Taiwan Mobile, stated that the expanded partnership with Nokia will improve the 5G experience for their customers and support the growing number of IoT devices on their network. By using Nokia's AirScale portfolio, they aim to enhance network performance, capacity, sustainability, and advance their Telco+Tech strategies to provide superior connectivity to urban and rural areas.

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, mentioned that the collaboration with Taiwan Mobile will modernize their 5G and 4G networks, delivering better performance, coverage, and customer experience. The deployment of Nokia's energy-efficient AirScale equipment will create a greener network with reduced environmental impact, aligning with Taiwan Mobile's sustainability objectives.
