Nokia has been chosen by Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) to upgrade its 5G network in central and southern Taiwan in a one-year extension deal.

The project aims to improve the performance, capacity, and energy efficiency of CHT's 5G network, setting the stage for future advancements.

The deployment is currently in progress and is expected to take twelve months. Nokia will enhance CHT's network with solutions from its 5G AirScale portfolio, including its baseband, Massive MIMO radios, and Remote Radio Head products.

This includes utilizing Nokia's advanced Massive MIMO Habrok radios (both the 32 TRX and 64 TRX versions) to cover various scenarios. The deal also includes Nokia's AirScale Pandion FDD multiband remote radio heads, all of which are powered by Nokia's energy-efficient ReefShark System-on-Chip technology.

Nokia will also provide services like digital deployment, optimization, and technical support. CHT will utilize Nokia's AI-powered MantaRay solutions for network monitoring and optimization. The goal is to achieve energy savings through innovative RAN software features like deep sleep mode, MIMO muting, and the MantaRay Energy solution.

Nokia will deploy its 7250 interconnect router (IXR) to support baseband aggregation at its sites to meet CHT's growing business service demands. This deal strengthens the long-standing partnership between Nokia and CHT, dating back to the 2G era.

Dr. Chung-Yung Chia, Vice President of Network Technology Group at CHT, highlighted the importance of this partnership in preparing for the 5G-Advanced era.

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, emphasized that this expanded deal will help CHT improve its network performance, capacity, and sustainability efforts.
