Shanghai is set to become one of the first few Asian cities to have complete 5G coverage by the year 2020.

According to a guideline introduced by the municipal government for the deployment and application of 5G network coverage, 10,000 5G base stations will be constructed to be extended towards the main suburbs and the entire downtown area by the end of this year.

Over the next three years, Shanghai aims to unveil a blueprint for the promotion and marketing of 5G in key industries such as education, transportation, manufacturing, entertainment and medical services, among others.

“The development of 5G requires a process,” Wu Hequan, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences said. “It'll take seven to eight years for 5G to achieve the coverage of 4G.”

As of now, China is currently conducting 5G trials across all major cities, regions and provinces in the country, putting China at the forefront of 5G testing and evaluation.
