NTT DOCOMO has unveiled a novel artificial intelligence system with the capacity to predict the physiological changes expected to occur in individuals' brains throughout their lifetimes.
Revolutionizing Healthcare
Based on a dataset consisting of about 150,000 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans, the cutting-edge technology utilizes a cutting-edge machine learning (ML) framework, known as a generative adversarial network (GAN), to generate visuals that predict the future appearance of an individual’s brain.
This development has the potential to reshape the study of brain health and could aid in the prevention of dementia.
The technology generates brain images by predicting changes in the volume of the hippocampus (which affects brain function, memory, and dementia). The automated generation of future brain scans could allow people to visualize their brain's possible trajectory.
This groundbreaking technology, developed by Dr. Yuhei Chiba— a psychiatrist, dementia specialist, and founder of YUAD— together with Biomy, Inc, demonstrated the convergence of technology and healthcare, providing the general public with a better understanding of their brain health.
DOCOMO is currently developing ways to integrate lifestyle information, collected through smartphones and survey data, into technologies that could be used in everyday life.
This could potentially impact the attitudes of society, encouraging better lifestyles and frequent brain check-ups. The combination of technology and healthcare has the potential to prove to be a game-changer, not only in terms of extending healthy lifespans but also in terms of reducing the expenses of healthcare and caregiving.
