Nokia announced that StarHub has completed the nationwide rollout of its XGS-PON (10 Gigabit Symmetrical Passive Optical Network) network, delivering ultra-fast 10 Gbps internet speeds to hundreds of thousands of homes across Singapore.
The upgraded infrastructure enhances broadband capacity to support data-intensive applications such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), immersive gaming, and advanced security, while also enabling StarHub to introduce new premium services and revenue opportunities.
To optimize network performance, StarHub is deploying Nokia’s Altiplano Access Controller, leveraging AI-driven operations (AIOps) to automate network management and improve efficiency. The system enables proactive detection of network anomalies, anticipates service disruptions, and enhances network utilization through advanced analytics. AI-powered tools, including the ONT Health Monitor, will further streamline operations and increase automation.

Lee Yeu Ching, Vice President of Fixed and Media Networks at StarHub, highlighted the company’s commitment to advancing its network with the goal of improving user experience and operational efficiency. He credited Nokia, a long-term partner, for its key role in successfully completing the initiative.
"Nokia products and services have helped us seamlessly and rapidly transition to XGS-PON, enabling faster uptake of 10 Gbps services to support Singapore’s national digital transformation plan. This milestone also signifies a meaningful achievement in StarHub’s ‘Cloud Infinity’ strategy. We are now looking forward to providing not only faster internet access, but also enhanced user experience for advance applications such as augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) and metaverse, among others,” he continued.
StarHub, the first operator to launch XGS-PON services in Singapore in February 2023, has now become the world’s first to fully transition to a nationwide software-defined access network (SDAN) using Nokia’s Altiplano solution. This rapid deployment aligns with Singapore’s Digital Connectivity Blueprint, supporting the government’s goal of accelerating 10 Gbps PON adoption.
Ming Kin Ngiam, Head of SEA South for Network Infrastructure Sales at Nokia, emphasized that the industry is transitioning into the ‘Fiber-for-Everything’ era, where advancements like next-generation passive optical networking (PON) and automation enable operators to optimize fiber networks, introduce new services, and accelerate monetization. He noted that StarHub is setting a new benchmark in network modernization with its extensive XGS-PON and SDAN deployment and is enthused by the prospect of their continued partnership, which will drive AI/ML automation and service innovation.
