Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the state-run telecom provider in India, has introduced its direct-to-device satellite connectivity service, marking the country's first satellite-to-device communication offering.

Announced by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the service was developed in collaboration with US-based Viasat, a communications technology company. The service aims to enhance connectivity in remote regions, ensuring users remain connected in even the most isolated locations.

BSNL's new satellite service is designed to assist users in remote areas with limited network access. Whether it be in the Spiti Valley or rural regions, the service enables users to stay connected with family and friends even when cellular or Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. It supports emergency calls, SoS messaging, and UPI payments, ensuring connectivity in critical situations.

In partnership with Viasat, BSNL has introduced two-way satellite communication, utilizing Viasat's geostationary L-band satellites positioned 36,000 km away.

A demonstration highlighted the system's ability to send and receive messages over these vast distances, marking a major milestone in India’s development of non-terrestrial network (NTN) capabilities.

Although BSNL's satellite connectivity service is now active, the company has not yet provided details on how users can access it. It is unclear whether the service will be included in existing plans or offered as a separate package. The service is expected to benefit users in rural and remote areas, with more information on pricing and activation anticipated soon.

This new satellite service positions India among the select few countries offering direct satellite connectivity to consumers, highlighting BSNL’s efforts to enhance network access for all users across the country.
