SK Telecom and Nokia have signed an agreement to test and implement fiber sensing, a fixed network technology powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

Fiber sensing is a technology that can detect changes in the environment that may impact optical cables in fixed networks. By monitoring these changes, potential damage to the network or surrounding area can be identified.

The two companies aim to use fiber sensing to detect earthquakes, climate changes, and issues caused by construction near fixed networks. They plan to gather data from commercial networks using machine learning (ML) and aim to launch fiber sensing in Korea by the end of the year.

SK Telecom intends to deploy fiber sensing across its national fixed network and establish a proactive response system to minimize damage from line breaks at construction sites. This will help prevent service disruptions caused by unexpected accidents.

Ryu Jeong-hwan, Head of Infrastructure Strategy Technology CT at SK Telecom, stated that the collaboration between the two companies will help them quickly adopt new AI technologies and prepare for the AI era.

John Harrington, President of Nokia Asia Pacific, is excited about the prospect of integrating Nokia’s sensing technology into AI-based automated networks through this agreement.

Together, both entities aim to deliver reliable services by detecting and addressing issues in advance.
