One New Zealand is postponing the shutdown of its 3G network from August 31, 2024, to March 31, 2025.

The postponement aims to facilitate customers transition from older devices that depend on 3G technology to newer devices that support 4G and 5G.

Tony Baird, Chief Technology Officer of One NZ, noted the company's dedication to enhancing its 4G and 5G infrastructure. During the last eighteen months, One New Zealand has strengthened its network by building and upgrading more than 500 sites across the country and intends to continue expanding in 2024.

“Overseas operators are already shutting down 3G and this is another reason why customers will need to have an up-to-date phone that will be able to connect to 4G voice and data whilst travelling,” said Baird.

Additionally, One NZ’s 2G network is confirmed to be switched off at the end of 2025 due to the declining demand for such services in favor of more advanced networks.

One NZ also intends to enhance its 4G and 5G coverage by integrating satellite services in the future. The startup plans to introduce a text service in partnership with SpaceX later this year and will subsequently offer voice and internet services in 2025.

Baird reiterated the need for clients to upgrade their devices to ensure continuous connectivity in light of these advancements. He strongly encouraged customers who are still using devices that rely on 2G or 3G networks to swiftly switch to devices that are compatible with 4G or 5G networks.

One NZ’s postponement of its 3G shutdown and the closure of its 2G network demonstrates the company’s dedication to improving telecommunications infrastructure and facilitating a seamless transition for customers to 4G and 5G in the country.
