NTT DOCOMO and Korean telecommunication operator, SK Telecom (SKT), have released two white papers outlining energy-efficient 5G mobile networks, related technologies, and requirements for future 6G networks. This represents the initial result of a foundational agreement inked by the two firms last November, which aims to delve into a technical collaboration concerning next-generation telecommunication infrastructure technologies for the advancement of 5G and 6G.
Energy-Efficient 5G Mobile Networks
The white paper on energy-efficient 5G mobile networks explores methods to achieve significant energy savings in base stations by analyzing current energy consumption levels and evaluating potential energy-saving technologies.
It emphasizes the collaborative efforts of operators and equipment vendors in implementing these strategies effectively. By providing practical recommendations and best practices, the paper envisions a future where 5G networks operate sustainably and efficiently, contributing to a greener digital infrastructure.
Yu Takki, Vice President and Head of Infra Tech Office at SKT, emphasized the significance of the white paper, outlining it as the first tangible result of their strategic partnership with NTT DOCOMO, expressing their commitment to leading the 5G evolution towards 6G.
6G Standardization
In terms of 6G, the white paper thoroughly examines various requisites and obstacles, including performance benchmarks, deployment scenarios across diverse frequency bands, coverage considerations, device compatibility in high-frequency bands, and the standardization processes necessary for transitioning to 6G architecture.
NTT DOCOMO and SKT plan to continue collaborating in various technical fields to enhance the competitiveness and efficiency of 5G, support global standardization and the technical verification of 6G, and work with global telecom operators on 6G standardization and R&D to build a global ecosystem encompassing advanced industries and technologies.
