One New Zealand (One NZ), New Zealand's major telecommunications company, has announced a massive network upgrade that will give faster speeds and improved connectivity to its 5G clients. The company has retuned its entire network to make use of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment's (MBIE) recently allocated 5G spectrum.

Thaigan Govender, head of mobile networks at One NZ, expressed excitement about the new development, saying, "This awesome upgrade means faster social media, gaming and HD streaming — more of what our customers love to do on their mobile devices."

Mr. Govender also highlighted impressive testing results, showcasing download speeds of up to 1.4 Gbps. With such fast speeds, a typical HD movie can now be downloaded in approximately 15 seconds.

Moreover, the advantages of this upgrade extend beyond entertainment services such as TikTok and Netflix. The network re-tuning provides additional capacity, resulting in greater Fixed Wireless Access availability at quicker download and upload rates. For some clients, this makes it a fantastic alternative to regular fixed-line broadband, boosting their internet experience.

The re-tuning procedure, which involves a frequency swap and a bandwidth extension from 60 to 80 MHz, efficiently optimizes the network's performance. This update demonstrates One NZ's dedication to technological innovation in the telco industry.

“We’re excited about the continued technological innovation 5G is driving to help make Aotearoa more awesome. From private 5G networks to 5G-supported edge computing, the future is bright,” Mr. Govender added.

One NZ now has over 500 live 5G sites, with plans to develop or upgrade hundreds more over the next year.
