India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has partnered with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to explore AI-driven digital twin technologies for future-ready infrastructure planning.

ITU, headquartered in Geneva, has been facilitating global connectivity since 1865. The organization comprises 194 member states and over 1,000 institutions, including universities and international organizations.

Neeraj Mittal, Secretary, of the Department of Telecommunications, visited Geneva to strengthen India’s global digital leadership and expand collaborations with key players in the telecom sector. During the visit, DoT and ITU signed a Letter of Intent to advance AI-based digital twin technologies, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for technological leadership. The initiative also aims to support PhD students researching telecom advancements.

Mittal held discussions with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin, reaffirming India’s commitment to digital connectivity, inclusion, and innovation. Talks covered India’s progress in 5G and 6G, AI-driven digital transformation, and cybersecurity frameworks. The partnership will also explore joint initiatives in AI-driven solutions, virtual world technologies, and IMT-2030 (6G), a next-generation telecom framework.

The agreement between DoT and ITU extends beyond technology development, promoting global standards, sustainability, capacity building, and citizen participation in urban planning. AI-powered digital twins, which create virtual models of physical network components, will enhance real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and infrastructure optimization.

DoT and ITU will also exchange insights from India’s Sangam initiative and ITU’s Citiverse project, contributing to global standards on smart cities and digital twins. The collaboration will facilitate regulatory adaptations, pilot projects, and AI-driven citizen engagement, fostering participatory governance in urban development.
