Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled plans to invest USD 8.3 billion in cloud infrastructure in the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region, located in Maharashtra, India.
This initiative aims to enhance the country’s cloud computing capabilities and is expected to contribute USD 15.3 billion to India’s GDP while generating over 81,300 full-time jobs annually in the local data center supply chain by 2030. The investment is part of AWS’s broader commitment to invest USD 12.7 billion in India’s cloud infrastructure by 2030 to meet the surging demand for cloud services.
To formalize this investment, the Government of Maharashtra and AWS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on January 22, 2025, at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis is enthused by the partnership, highlighting AWS’s role as a leading global hyperscaler. He emphasized that AWS’s expansion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region marks a significant milestone for the state as it strengthens technological infrastructure, fosters innovation, drives economic growth, and creates jobs. Maharashtra remains committed to fostering an environment conducive to transformative investments that propel its digital future.

Advancing India’s Digital Economy
David Zapolsky, Senior Vice President of Global Public Policy and General Counsel at Amazon, underscored India's growing digital economy and the rising demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI). AWS’s USD 8.3 billion investment in Maharashtra will support this growth while furthering the state's digital ambitions. The collaboration between AWS and the Maharashtra government aims to provide businesses and organizations across India with access to cutting-edge technology.
AWS has already invested over USD 3.7 billion in Maharashtra’s cloud infrastructure between 2016 and 2022. The additional investment in the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region is projected to significantly boost India’s economy, driving productivity, supporting digital transformation, upskilling the workforce, and fostering renewable energy projects. AWS’s expansion in India has been ongoing, with its first cloud infrastructure region launched in 2016, followed by a second in 2022. These regions allow businesses to run workloads with high resilience, availability, and low latency while ensuring data remains securely stored within India.

Community Initiatives for Social Impact
Many Indian enterprises, startups, and public sector organizations rely on AWS to enhance cost efficiency, drive innovation, and transform operations. AWS collaborates with strategic partners through the AWS Partner Network (APN), enabling customers to scale digital solutions both locally and globally. To bridge India’s digital skills gap, AWS has trained over 5.9 million individuals in cloud technologies since 2017 and introduced the AWS Skills-to-Jobs Tech Alliance to enhance career readiness and modernize technology curricula. Additionally, Amazon’s community initiatives in Maharashtra focus on STEAM education, women’s empowerment, skills development, and nutrition and healthcare, ensuring a lasting positive impact.
AWS remains dedicated to sustainability, prioritizing energy efficiency in its data center operations. A recent study by Accenture, commissioned by AWS, found that shifting IT workloads from on-premises infrastructure to AWS cloud data centers can significantly reduce the environmental impact of AI usage. AWS’s global infrastructure is up to 4.1 times more efficient than traditional on-premises setups, with optimized workloads on AWS potentially reducing carbon footprints by up to 99%.
In 2023, Amazon achieved 100% renewable energy usage across all its operations, including data centers, seven years ahead of its initial target. This success aligns with the company’s investment in over 50 renewable energy projects in India and its broader goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Globally, Amazon has backed more than 600 renewable energy initiatives and has been recognized as the top corporate buyer of renewable energy for five consecutive years, according to BloombergNEF (BNEF).
Through cloud infrastructure expansion, customer empowerment, strategic partnerships, social impact initiatives, and sustainability efforts, AWS plays a vital role in advancing India’s digital transformation. As India accelerates its digital growth, AWS’s investments will continue to drive innovation, create employment opportunities, and make a lasting economic impact.
