The Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, convened a meeting with the Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) for telecom service providers, where he met with Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairperson of Bharti Enterprises; Akash Ambani, Chairperson of Reliance Jio; Gopal Vittal, CEO of Airtel; and Akshaya Moondra, CEO of Vodafone Idea.

During the meeting, industry leaders updated the minister on the status of 5G deployment in the country, discussed the challenges confronting telecom companies, and explored potential strategies to improve service delivery.

Scindia also held discussions with participants from two more SACs—internet service providers and infrastructure providers, and academics and research and development in the telecom sector. The former focused on improving broadband penetration and developing infrastructure, while the latter highlighted the importance of collaborations between industry and academia to drive innovation and nurture a proficient telecom workforce.

Scindia said, “We've identified a rather deep agenda for all three committees. Now, the members of these committees and us will be working together. There are varied schedules for the first presentation of these committees over the next couple of weeks. And then we will be taking each individual issue at a time, delving into the details, and devising an action plan with clear timelines and actionable items so that we can take our sector forward.”

One day prior to the aforementioned meeting, Scindia conducted a session with members of the remaining three SACs: the telecom sector’s original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), the telecom electronics ecosystem, and the satellite communication ecosystem. These committees collectively provide valuable insights to the Department of Telecommunications.

Notably, these meetings were labeled ‘introductory’ and aimed to establish agendas; no policy decisions were made, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
