The government of Fiji disclosed that it has started collaborating with mobile network providers to eventually set up 5G infrastructure, opening the door for the launch of commercial services.
According to the news, deputy prime minister Manoa Kamikamica announced the news with plans to turn Fiji into a technological hub, but he did not provide a date for 5G services. The minister was speaking at the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation's Breakfast with Ministers event.
The cabinet will first be asked to approve the government's 5G action plan.
Prime Minister Kamikamica stated, “I would like to advise that 5G is on its way to Fiji. Right now, we are issuing licenses to the two players for the testing; there are some regulations we need to step through, and once that is done, we will roll out the 5G network.”
He revealed that Fiji has two operator players, which are Vodafone and Digicel. He added that 95% of the island's population currently has access to 3G and 4G, and the remaining 5% will in the following four years.
