Rakuten Symphony has announced the commercial launch of “Rakuten NEO,” an AI-powered IoT solution that aims to optimize space management and operational efficiency for unmanned businesses in Japan.

Rakuten NEO was introduced to help ease Japan's labor shortages by automating a variety of commercial procedures. It uses advanced machine learning (ML) algorithms and sensor technology to increase the operational efficiency of unmanned businesses, allowing the quick expansion of fully unmanned operations and aiding in the transfer of traditionally staffed businesses to unmanned models.

The technology includes a wide range of remote support capabilities, such as access control, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), humidity management, and inventory inspection. It also responds in real time to crises like unauthorized access and water leakages. This enables the control of several places simultaneously with minimum personnel presence, increasing efficiency and lowering labor expenses.

Rakuten NEO uses a SaaS (Software as a Service) model, which allows organizations to select the functions they require. This flexibility makes cost-cutting and efficient operations more feasible.

Rakuten Symphony collaborated with South Korean firm, Alicorn, opting to build Rakuten NEO on the Alicorn Space AI (ASA) service. Alicorn technology has already enabled a single operator to oversee 12 offices over a 600-kilometer distance. Over ten major South Korean organizations, including GS Holdings Corp. and Shinhan Securities Co., Ltd., have deployed this technology, resulting in an estimated 80% reduction in labor expenses and greatly improving operational efficiency.

Following its success in South Korea, Rakuten Symphony is launching Rakuten NEO to the Japanese market, with plans to expand globally.

Ryan Son, President of Rakuten Symphony’s Internet Services Business Unit, highlighted the technology’s potential to address the current labor shortage in Japan’s retail industry.

“We expect Rakuten NEO to alleviate the burdens of hiring, managing staff and controlling costs for business owners,” said Son.

Rakuten remains committed to contributing to society by generating value via innovation and entrepreneurship.
