Singapore’s leading telecommunications provider achieved a world first mobile peak speed with Ericsson on 12 February. Singtel achieved 1Gbps mobile peak speed on Ericsson’s quad-band FDD/TDD Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology. This will enable Singtel to optimize the usage of its newly acquired 2500 MHz spectrum band and enhance the consumer’s mobile experience.
“Singtel and Ericsson have a common goal of delivering the best mobile network in Singapore by seamlessly combining both FDD and TDD technologies in one 4G LTE network,” said Martin Wiktorin, Country Manager for Ericsson Singapore, Brunei & the Philippines. “Singtel subscribers will be able to enjoy higher speeds with Bandwidth-Aware CA, which also allows network providers to manage spectrum utilization more efficiently.”
Following the successful trial, Singtel will progressively roll out this technology at key high traffic locations such as Orchard Road, Raffles Place, Tanjong Pagar and Clarke Quay. Handsets supporting the 1Gbps speeds offered by quad-band FDD/TDD CA are expected to be available from the second half of 2018.
Existing Singtel smartphone users can enjoy up to 20 percent faster mobile broadband speeds on average, as Singtel deploys Ericsson’s intelligent technology Bandwidth-Aware CA feature. This feature allows operators to manage spectrum more efficiently and supports customers’ smartphones to automatically select the best spectrum band combination available, enabling optimum speeds.
“As the world prepares for the 5G era, Singtel is leveraging its spectrum assets and the latest advancements in mobile technology to optimize our network usage,” said Mark Chong, Group Chief Technology Officer, Singtel. “Singtel will continue to fully integrate our current capabilities and spectrum assets with cutting-edge technology solutions to ensure that we provide customers a future-ready, ultra-fast and low latency mobile network.”
