Huawei and Maxis have successfully conducted the first 5G-Advanced technology trial in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
The live speed test demonstrated the capabilities of 5G-Advanced, achieving ultra-fast peak speeds of up to 8Gbps.
The first-ever trial held at KLCC The Place, was officiated by Yang Berhormat Fahmi Fadzil, the Minister of Communications. Also present at the ceremony was Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Bin Fateh Din, the Chairman of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Driving Intelligent Solutions
Goh Seow Eng, CEO of Maxis, expressed delight in achieving a significant milestone not just in the country, but in Southeast Asia, highlighting the promising potential of the technology in driving intelligent solutions in various industries and economies.
“We look forward to exploring this technology and developing solutions that will benefit industries and enterprises, and advance our nation’s digital ambition,” said Goh Seow Eng.
Throughout the trial, demonstrations showcased the interactive applications of 5G-Advanced, including live 3D content, low-latency streaming of various views of Kuala Lumpur’s city center, and immersive augmented reality (AR) experiences.
These demonstrations showcased the potential of 5G-Advanced (also known as 5.5G), demonstrating speeds that are 10 times faster than the current 5G.
Advancing 5G in Malaysia
Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Bin Fateh Din was also optimistic about the possible role 5.5G will play in advancing Malaysia's telecommunications sector, citing the potential shown in the trial.
“We hope more industry players will pioneer innovative technologies that will help Malaysian enterprises move up the value chain through next-generation commercial and industrial solutions. This will position Malaysia as a front-runner in telecommunications, globally.”
5.5G is capable of facilitating digitalization, automation, and the Internet of Things (IoT) in different sectors, which can help catalyze the digital transformation of critical industries, including the sectors encompassing high-end manufacturing, automotive, and smart transportation.
Meanwhile, through the continuous research and development (R&D) of 5.5G, Huawei is committed to supporting the country in its digital transformation journey.
