Microsoft is set to launch its first cloud region in Malaysia by mid-year, featuring three data centers in the greater Kuala Lumpur area.

The initiative follows the company's announcement of a USD 2.2 billion investment in the country.

Laurence Si, Managing Director of Microsoft Malaysia, confirmed that the data centers, named Malaysia West Cloud, will commence operations in the second quarter of 2025. However, the company did not disclose the expected capacity of the data centers.

Addressing concerns about U.S. export controls on semiconductor chips, Si stated that Microsoft had not encountered any issues in exporting chips to Malaysia. He noted that the company's operations were proceeding as usual, with strong stakeholder relationships and investment plans remaining on schedule.

Si added that local businesses and organizations would be able to innovate more quickly and securely, supporting Malaysia's goal of establishing itself as a leading hub for cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) growth in Southeast Asia.

Microsoft’s investment, unveiled in May 2024, aims to expand its cloud and artificial intelligence services in Malaysia over the next four years. The company projects that its commitment will generate USD 10.9 billion in revenue and create over 37,000 jobs.
