Japan’s NEC Corporation, NTT Communications Corporation, Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Internet Initiative Japan Inc. have announced that they have signed a contract with JSC Uzbektelecom for a telecommunications infrastructure development project.
The Japanese firms will develop data centers and telecommunications infrastructure for an advanced data communication system for the state-owned telecommunications operator in Uzbekistan.
The deployment of the system is scheduled to begin in 2023, and the overall operation is expected to significantly improve the communications environment in Uzbekistan.
The project was initiated in response to the rapidly growing data communication demand driven by the digitalization of various industries in Uzbekistan. The country is expanding its telecommunications infrastructure to improve communication quality and narrow the digital divide between urban and rural areas.
The government of Uzbekistan aims to accelerate digital transformation in the country and introduce the latest information technologies for its digitalization strategy, or what it calls “Digital Uzbekistan 2030.”
The four Japanese companies will provide the telecommunications equipment and services required for Uzbektelecom’s data centers in three major cities, including Tashkent, Bukhara and Kokand, as well as for the expansion of the telecommunications transport and data networks and the international data communication network.
The project is funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI) and MUFG Bank, Ltd.
